Red Hook Blacksmith Forges On After Storm – NY1.com
By now you have probably heard the news that Red Hook took a big hit from Hurricane Sandy.
Two weeks prior to the storm, I moved my metal studio, She-Weld, two blocks up the street to a just-renovated 2500 sq. ft. space at Valentino Pier. We took on nearly 6 feet of water from the storm, severely damaging equipment, supplies, and projects. Even tools that can be saved require hours of clean-up.
I had a double whammy of also 4-1/2 feet of flooding in my apartment, rendering that space unlivable. Needless to say, this compounds the difficulties with time and resources to get the workshop up and running again.
Take a look at the video by BRIC Arts | Media | Bklyn featuring myself and other Red Hook artists affected by the storm:
And I attached both a before & after picture of the studio.
I still am looking forward to the potential of this new space: to have expanded classes and workshop programming, a gallery/showroom, rental blacksmith shop hours, and to create larger projects. Over the last few weeks volunteers, and friends lending equipment, have made possible the resumption of some work. But we need need more help.
Here’s how you can help:
